Soup-er

Wednesday 2241hrs

Finally, Dr Hope is going back to work. They’re out of pocket by a couple of grand, the waiting lists have grown a little and poor Dr Hope has been splattered all over the internet tabloids.

Still, at least he’s getting back to work on Friday. It still amazes me that they had to suspend him and are treating the matter “Urgently”, it’s not as if he killed anyone, or administered the wrong drugs

The BBC once again provide the source of this morning’s rage with THIS article and no, the BBC isn’t the party at fault here (Just in case you were wondering…)

The story relates to a Dr Terence Hope, at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, UK. He earns in the region of £80k per annum working as a neuro surgeon, a very complex, demanding and difficult job. The work they do is often life saving, my own mum was brought back from the brink after a double brain aneurism a few years ago by a specialist brain surgeon, so my respect goes out to these people. Great dollops of respect.
So it is, with horror, I see that Dr Hope has been suspended from work for almost a week now, for helping himself to an extra portion of croutons that he failed to pay for.

Ok, a weeks worth of this gents time is roughly worth £1,500 assuming that he works 52 weeks a year. The croutons, even if they were bought from Harrods or hand crafted by Henri Charpentier himself , would not be worth more than a couple of quid.

This means, as Dr Hope is out on full pay, that over a matter of some 20p croutons the hospital is so far down around £1499.80
Way to go guys!
Not to mention the fact that whilst he’s suspended, brain-trauma waiting lists start to mount up and emergency cases are going to come through that will have to wait even though they can’t. Bearing in mind my beloved mum (Left. No, neither of those in the photo are me, I was holding the camera.) may have been forced into an early departure if her emergency surgeon had been on suspension for nicking a packet of crisps, things like this rile me up.

They should dock his pay for the 20p and suspend the little Hitler in the canteen, for putting peoples’ lives at risk. Bureaucracy. GAH!

This morning I received a delivery from Overclockers.co.uk, parts for constructing a friend’s PC.
I unpacked everything and geave everything the obligatory looking over. Lo, to my absolute lack of surprise, OCUK have screwed up again. This would, on a one-off, not bug me, however I have yet to order something from them and have it turn up correct and on time.

They are advertising Shuttle 6-in-1 card readers, which ship with changeable bezels and are of reasnobly decent construction.

What they SELL are these, some dodgy knockoff OEM part that looks like it was glued together using Games Workshop castoffs.

Fetid Video

Saturday 1015hrs

Is this really a rant?
Unsure.

All I wanted to do was bring to the attention of the public the availability of the following two peices of software. One is RealPlayer Alternative and one is QuickTime Alternative.
I am unsure as to the legality of these substitutes, but whoever wrote them deserves a lesser sentence than the evil, evil people who wrote the actual Realplayer and Quicktime video players. Such abortive, buggy and hopelessly bloated software should never see daylight, let alone become an internet Pseudo Standard.

So!

Format your winows boxes today, and pop these beauties on your hard-drive instead of the virii we’ve all learned to hate, RealPlay.C.worm and Quicktime.Win32.Trojan…

Brevity

Tuesday 1244hrs

I don’t know how many of you are ganesplayers gamesplayers, but recently I’ve been getting a little ticked off with the “Single Player Experiences” that games companies are offering these days. Back in the day ™ you could hack away at a single player game for weeks on end and finally, after a couple of decent plot twists you’d reach the end, satisfied. As I see it, going to watch a movie costs about 4 pounds, a game costs 10 times that and thus should last 10 times longer. We’re talking 20 hours minimum. MINIMUM. No, hell, even 20 hours is too short…

Bloodsuckers

Monday 1626hrs

When something like this crops up, I find myself wondering whether the new charges / taxes / levies / fees / payments will ever actually lead to a reduction of charges elsewhere. Will they ever? Probably not. Why, as a government, let go of a good thing if people have adapted to accomodate it ?

One thing few people realise is that apparently, looking back through the history of public taxation and suchlike, taxes were brought in as a short-term measure and levied against only those who had money spare to pay them. But, after a while, why would any sane government tick let go of such a juicy blood vessel?

Microsoft’s FAT charges: Digital Photography Review

Lovely. You have to admire commercialism. If MS can do this to something like FAT, we can only hope that all the rubbish about software patents is never put through the courts, else independant software development is going to get shot through the head. For those who don’t know what I’m on about, you should check this out.
